Fighting urban blight could cost the city of Detroit $2 billion, according to a newly released report from the city's Blight Removal Task Force.

The report states a minimum of $850 million needs to be spent in the next five years, but warns that amount could easily climb into the billions.

"The greatest source of variability in the bottom line - is the removal of blighted structures," states the report.

The task force says out of the city's 840,000 parcels, nearly 85,000 are decaying and need to be cleared. They also found some 40,000 structures need to be torn down immediately.

The group reported that all blight could be removed within five years.
