Pilots Fly by Thought with Brain Steer Technology

Pilots may only have to think to fly a plane in the future, thanks to brain-operated technology.

Researchers at Technische Universität München (TUM), a German university, gave seven test subjects special caps to wear. The caps were equipped with electrodes that could read electrical signals from the brain.

Those signals were then translated into computer commands.

According to CNET.com, the seven subjects were able to fly a plane in a flight simulator even though they weren't all pilots.

One person had no experience in the cockpit, but all of them flew well enough in the simulator to meet some of the standards for getting a pilot's license.

"With brain control, flying in itself could become easier. This would reduce the workload of pilots and thereby increase safety," Tim Fricke, who heads the project at TUM, explained in a statement.

"In addition, pilots would have more freedom of movement to manage other manual tasks in the cockpit," he said.
