TXDOT Bans Commandments on Private Property

The Texas Department of Transportation is under fire for banning a Ten Commandments sign on a Hemphill, Texas, woman's private property.

The 6 by 12-foot sign sits on Jeanette Golden's land, which faces Highway 21. TXDOT asked her to take it down because the sign is on a road that is "statutorily prohibited from having signage at all."

However, the Liberty Institute issued a letter to the agency, saying their request violates Golden's right to freedom of religious expression.

The legal group is also calling on the department to cancel its removal order.

"It is outrageous that TXDOT is preventing Texans from having signs on their own private property," Liberty Institute Senior Counsel Michael Berry charged.

"Religious freedom and private property rights are some of the most sacred rights Texans and Americans enjoy, dating back to the founding of Texas and our nation," he said.
