Wis. Abortion Industry Fights Hospital Requirement

Abortion providers in Wisconsin are trying to persuade a federal judge to strike down a law that requires them to have hospital admitting privileges.

U.S. District Judge William Conley blocked the law from taking effect after abortion providers filed suit last summer. They argue the mandate creates bureaucratic hurdles that will force some clinics to close.

Supporters of the law say it will ensure proper care if a woman develops complications during an abortion and has to be hospitalized.

Preliminary hearings are being held this week, but the judge is not expected to make a decision for weeks.
