Michigan officials are considering whether to put a Nativity scene on the state capitol lawn this year with the state Christmas tree.

But the Madison-based Freedom from Religion Foundation says if there's a Nativity scene there should also be a secular counter-display as well.

"It's best to just keep the space neutral from religion," FFRF attorney Rebecca Markert said. "Once you open up that door you have to allow everything, and you can see that has turned into a circus in other areas of the country."

The state has brought in an attorney for advice on various issues, including the request for the Nativity scene and other displays.

"We think it's prudent in this case," Michigan Live quoted Commissioner John Truscott said. "We'd rather not be stuck behind the eight ball if somebody decides to go to court over this, and part of it is just researching what's allowed at the Capitol."
