The Affordable Care Act could be making healthcare more expensive, according to a new study. The Washington Times reports that average premiums have skyrocketed - for some groups by as much as 78 percent.

HealthPocket shared the study with The Washington Times Tuesday. It examined average health insurance premiums before the implementation of Obamacare in 2013 and then after in 2014.

Researchers found average insurance premiums in the 23-year-old demographic rose an average of 78.2 percent, before factoring in government subsidies. Women in that same age range had premiums rise 44.9 percent.

"It's very eye-opening in terms of the transformation occuring within the individual health insurance market," Kev Coleman told The Washington Times. Coleman is head of research and data at HealthPocket.

The research focused on people of three age group -- 23, 30, and 63 -- using data for nonsmoking men and women with no spouses or children.
