Renovate or Relocate? Don't Call a Realtor Just Yet

What do you do when you start to question if your current home is still the best fit for you? In most cases, it comes down to two options: renovate or relocate.

According to a recent Realtor.com report, in 2014, more people chose renovation.

CBN News spoke with Stephan Sardone of Sardone Construction, who says there are several key reasons why renovating trumps relocating and offers tips on how to make your old home feel brand new.

Below Sardone offers several main reasons renovating is best:

1. You purchased your home because you liked it.

You were drawn to the front porch. You could imagine welcoming many into the beautiful entryway. Whether it was the location, the "feel," the number of bedrooms or because it was in the best school district, you liked something about it. Over time you have determined it isn't your dream home - the kitchen is bland; the master bath insufficient. And as much as you tried to convince yourself otherwise, you do need a second story.

2. You created memories in your home.

Perhaps you brought your first (second or third) baby home to this house. You hosted your first married Thanksgiving there. Your rescued puppy cozied up to his first couch in your living room. Your kitchen pantry is marked with inches of growth from every few months of your kids' lives. You celebrated your first promotion there.

3. You know your neighbors.

Even the prickly ones. You know when Mary goes out to get the paper. The neighborhood cats know where you leave a water bowl. Evenings are enjoyed in the front yard, yelling from sides of streets, catching up on the day with familiar faces.

4. Your home is your home.

As with anything in our lives, things are ever evolving. With each new change or need, we can be tempted to move on. Home is home. Making your home more of the home you want is possible and necessary. Opening the door to change within the four walls of where you live can make opening the door to friends, family and more of the good part of life all the better.
