Oklahoma Sees Surge in Earthquakes in 2015
12-15-2015
There is literally a lot of shaking in Oklahoma, with earthquakes on the rise in the Sooner State.
Oklahoma saw 850 earthquakes of magnitude three or greater this year. That is up from 584 in 2014 and 109 in 2013.
Experts say the increase in quakes appears to be man-made in some cases.
The Oklahoma Geological Survey says the spike is due to the injection of water into the earth, used for oil and gas production.
Restrictions on the "injection wells" are now in place. But officials say it will take some time before they know if the restrictions are is reducing the number of quakes.
