Sgt. Bergdahl Faces Court-Martial in Desertion Case

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will face court-martial on charges of deserting his unit while in Afghanistan in 2009.

If he's found guilty, the 29-year-old could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Shortly after leaving his post in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika province on June 30, 2009, Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban.

In 2014, he was released into U.S. custody in exchange for several top Taliban leaders. Six U.S. troops lost their lives trying to find and rescue Bergdahl.

The prisoner swap sparked a firestorm of criticism, with some lawmakers accusing President Barack Obama of jeopardizing the safety of a nation for a deserter.
