Defiant OK Governor: Ten Commandments to Stay Put

The governor of Oklahoma says the granite monument of the Ten Commandments will remain standing at the state Capitol.

The state Supreme Court ruled last week that the monument violates the state constitution, but Gov. Mary Fallin disagreed.

"Oklahoma is a state where we respect the rule of law, and we will not ignore the state courts or their decisions," Fallin said. "However, we are also a state with three co-equal branches of government."

"During this process, which will involve both legal appeals and potential legislative and constitutional changes, the Ten Commandments monument will remain on the Capitol grounds," she said.

Fallin said the state Legislature is considering changes to the state constitution to make it clear that the Ten Commandments monument is legally acceptable.

She said the people of the state may get to vote on the issue.
