Former President George H.W. Bush is in a hospital in Portland, Maine, after he fell and broke a bone in his neck.

The incident happened Wednesday at his summer home in Kennebunkport.

"His condition is stable -- he is fine -- but he'll be in a neck brace," spokesman Jim McGrath said on Twitter.

News of the former president's fall has drawn an outpouring of support.

"Prayers for health to our nation's 41st president and U.S. Navy WWII fighter pilot, George H.W. Bush. Get well soon, Sir," Maine Rep. Tim Whelan, R-Dennis, tweeted.

"Sending all my thoughts and good wishes to President Bush for a speedy recovery," Chelsea Clinton said.

Bush's granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, said her family is optimistic he'll have a smooth recovery, NBC's "Today" reports.

"Always touched by kindness," she tweeted. "Thanks for all of your thoughts+prayers for our dear Gamps. We are optimistic that he will heal well."

At 91, Bush is the oldest living former president.
