Lawmakers in California are advancing new right-to-die laws that would allow terminally ill patients to end their lives under a doctor's care. The state Senate passed the measure Thursday in a 23-14 vote.

Sen. Holly Mitchell, D-Los Angeles, supported the plan.

"(The bill) will not force me, if it is not my religious, cultural, ethical belief to do this. It gives me the right, and gives me access to make a personal choice," Time magazine quoted Mitchell.

But Sen. Jeff Stone, R-Temecula, warned it could lead to the Golden State becoming known for "death tourism."

"What's going to be the new theme of the state of California?" Stone asked. "Come play, live, and die in California?"

The bill still faces several legislative hurdles before it could become law. Meanwhile, right-to-life advocates are speaking out about the dangers of such a law.

SaveCalifornia.com's Randy Thomasson said it is important for citizens to make their voices heard. He also said it's something Christians have a biblical mandate to stand against.
