Protests in Ferguson, Missouri, took a violent turn this week. Early Thursday, two officers were reportedly shot outside of the city police department as a demonstration was ending.

The shots came just hours after Police Chief Tom Jackson resigned. He stepped down after a Department of Justice report found widespread racially biased practices in the department.

"It took me at least 30 seconds of watching before I realized there was an officer down," CNN quoted witness Markus Loehrer. "We are not there to shoot cops; we don't like violence. So we did what anybody would do -- we ran away."

Bradley Rayford, another eyewitness, said, "Bullets were really right past my head. It was, it was kind of, traumatic. I'm still kind of in shock because of it."

The officers were from the neighboring Webster Groves and St. Louis County Police Departments. Both were seriously hurt.

"These police officers were standing there, and they were shot just because they were police officers," St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said.

Police are searching for the gunman.
