Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, died Saturday at the age of 46.

The younger Biden was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago. At that time he underwent what appeared to be successful treatment, involving surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

But the cancer came back. He was admitted to the hospital in May.

"The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words. We know that Beau's spirit will live on in all of us—especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter," Vice President Biden said in a statement Saturday night.

"Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known," his father said.

The father of two served as Delaware's 44th Attorney General. He was also an Iraq War veteran who earned a Bronze Star.

"For all that Beau Biden achieved in his life, nothing made him prouder; nothing made him happier; nothing claimed a fuller focus of his love and devotion than his family," President Barack Obama said in a statement late Saturday.

Beau Biden died surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his wife, and two children.
