Christian filmmaker Russell Wolfe, who was a driving force behind the highly successful independent film, "God's Not Dead," passed away Wednesday after fighting a losing battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Wolfe co-founded the company Pure Flix, dedicated to bringing Christian messages to films.

"God's Not Dead" is the most successful of those flms. It became the highest grossing independent faith film of 2014, surpassing $60 million at the box office.

Wolfe was diagnosed with ALS in December 2013 while "God's Not Dead" was in production.

He went public with his battle against the disease in March, putting out an emotional video asking people to pray for a healing miracle.

"As one of the founding fathers of Pure Flix, Russell always represented the vision to make a positive impact for Christ," Pure Flix co-founder David A.R. White said in a statement. "He did this consistently through his work, life, and relationships."

The Blaze reported another tribute paid by Pure Flix founding partner Michael Scott, who said Wolf "was a friend, business partner and truly a blessing to all who ever met him. His legacy will continue to influence the world through Christ through film and television."

Wolfe's other film credits include "What if..." and "In the Blink of an Eye."
