Several hundred people gathered over the weekend to protest the new LGBT policy of the Mormon Church.

The policy bans baptisms for children living with gay parents until they turn 18 years old and also makes gay marriage a sin worthy of expulsion.

The protests came one day after the Mormon Church stood behind its new policies, offering more explanation and clarifications.

Officials said the rules are intended to prevent children from being caught in a tug-of-war between teachings at home and church. They clarified that the rules apply only to children living primarily with a same-sex couple.

They also said that while the children of gay parents won't be given the full spectrum of ordinances, they aren't barred from attending worship services.

Mormon Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement that officials hope the expanded clarification issued Friday will provide understanding and context to Mormons who were considering leaving the faith.

Still, more than 1,500 protesters handed in letters of resignation, formally cutting ties with the Mormon Church and having their names removed from the faith's membership rolls. Most of those who resigned had already stopped attending church years ago.
