North Carolina leaders are looking to honor Billy Graham with a statue in the nation's capital.

The 96-year-old evangelist grew up in Charlotte and still lives in North Carolina.

State senators unanimously approved a measure to request a congressional committee accept Graham's likeness as a state contribution to the Capitol.

The proposal would replace a statue of Charles Aycock, a former North Carolina governor (1901-1905) with ties to white supremacy.

The measure will now go to Republican Gov. Pat McCrory's desk for approval.
