New York City public schools were closed Thursday in honor of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.

It was the first time the nation's largest school district closed for a Muslim holiday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this year the city's public schools would observe the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Vermont, Massachusetts and New Jersey also close their public school districts in recognition of Muslim holidays.
