From our nation's capital to our local communities, countless activists, civil leaders, artists, and families are remembering, honoring, and marching on the 30th anniversary of the holiday to commemorate slain civil rights hero, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thousands will gather in Washington, D.C., including President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, to honor the life and legacy MLK.

The president and the first lady will be among many who plan to attend a community service program to reflect on King's life struggle toward freedom and equality.

Among other celebrations in the capital, Attorney General Loretta Lynch is featured as a keynote speaker at a National Action Network King Day Awards program while FBI Director James Comey will lead a wreath-laying service at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

Meanwhile in South Carolina, about 1,000 civil rights leaders and activists participated in their annual march to their state capitol for The King Day at the Dome rally.

This year was particularly monumental for the marchers. It is their first annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. since the confederate flag was removed from the South Carolia capitol. It flew over the building for more than 50 years before being removed in July 2015 following a racially motivated shooting at a Charleston church where nine people were killed.

The South Carolina NAACP says that although much has been accomplished to honor King, there is still much more left to do.

This sentiment in especially echoed in this year's rally's theme "education equality." Speakers at this event are calling for future reform to provide minority students with more educational funds.

Elsewhere, at the King Center in Atlanta, Ebenezer Baptist Church is set to host a remembrance ceremony. It's called "Remember! Celebrate! Act! King's Legacy of Freedom for Our World." This ceremony punctuates more than a week of events in honor of the slain civil rights icon.

Meanwhile the New York State Capitol complex will host a free event at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center to feature numerous musical and theatrical tributes to King's legacy. The performances will feature Grammy-winning gospel artist Dorinda Clark and blues musician Guy Davis.

Rev. Bernice King is remembering her father as well during the celebrations. She wants her father's dream to grow. She said she envisions a global dream of freedom saying, "What most people around the world want, whatever nation they live in, is the freedom to participate in government, the freedom to prosper in life, and the freedom to peacefully coexist."

On this momentus day, people across the nation share her sentiment and love of freedom, while celebrating the life of a man who died fighting for it.
