Atheists Sue Texas Sheriff: 'No Crosses on Police Cruisers'

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group, has sued a West Texas county and its sheriff for putting crosses on patrol vehicles.

The group filed the suit against Brewster County and Sheriff Ronny Dodson to eliminate what they call exclusively Christian religious symbols on patrol cars. The lawsuit seeks to block religious messages on any Brewster County property.

In December, Sheriff Dodson asked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for an opinion on whether the donated stickers can stay on the government vehicles.

Dodson says the decals are not a statement of religious preference, but that his deputies  should be allowed to "ask for all the help" they can get.
