Gospel recording artist James Fortune has begun a five-day jail sentence for assaulting his wife.

Texas jail records show he turned himself in Monday night at a correctional facility about 20 miles outside Houston.

Fortune pleaded guilty earlier this month to assaulting his wife during an argument in 2014.

In addition to his jail sentence, Fortune must also serve five years of probation, do community service and not have any contact with his wife.

"I want to make a public apology to my family, friends and supporters for not being above reproach," the singer posted on Instagram in earlier this month.

"Please pray that during this process God continues to perfect and restore me so that I become a better man, father and Christian," he said.

The Grammy-nominated singer's hits include "Hold On" and "I Trust You."
