Israel's Prime Mininster Ehud Olmert is going to step down after his Kadima Party elects his successor next week.
Olmert has been battling a corruption investigation. There was speculation that he would try to extend his time in office for several months by stretching out the transition process.
Foreign minister Tzipi Livni is one of the favorites to replace Olmert as head of the party. But polls show a tight race for prime minister between Livni and former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
