Turkish authorities have reportedly foiled an assassination plot against U.S. President Barack Obama.
According to Turkish security sources, a Syrian national carrying a press credential for Al Jazeera Television was arrested last Friday. The man admitted plotting to stab Obama with a knife at the Alliance of Civilizations Summit in Istanbul on Tuesday.
The suspect, only identified as M.G., was arrested in Istanbul. He apparently has a home in Istanbul, but it is not clear if that is where he was arrested.
Al Jazeera's bureau chief in Ankara says the man's press credential is a forgery - he is not employed by their organization. The man has been regularly attending Middle East conferences and events held in Istanbul.
He reportedly told authorities that if he failed in his attempt to murder the President of the United States, three other accomplices would carry out the assassination.
Turkish authorities have passed on the initial results of their investigation to the United States Secret Service.
