Rescuers in Taiwan have found nearly 1,000 people alive in the area around three remote villages wiped out by typhoon Morakot, Taiwan's military said Wednesday.
The region was pummeled by the deadly storm over the weekend.
The storm killed more than 60 people. That number is expected to go up since many are still missing.
Taiwan has seen the worst flooding and mudslides in 50 years.
Typhoon Morakot destroyed more than 10,000 homes and flooded more than 1 million acres of cropland.
It's said direct economic losses have been estimated at 9.7 billion yuan ($1.4 billion).
