The U.S. military has announced an American soldier has been captured by insurgents in Afghanistan.

The soldier was reported missing Tuesday. He was captured just days before the start of a new U.S military offensive named Operation Strike of the Sword.

Thousands of Marines and hundreds of Afghan troops are now involved in the offensive to root out Taliban insurgents in the southern region of the country.
