China is defending its new requirement that personal computers sold in the country carry a software that filters online content.

They say it's targeted at preventing pornography and violence. But critics say Beijing routinely blocks political sites, especially anything challenging the ruling Communist party.

China has the world's largest population of Internet users -- 250 million.

It also has one of the world's tightest controls over the Internet.
