He reportedly enjoys skiing and studied English, German and French at a Swiss boarding school -- and is said to be a heavy drinker.

The reports about North Korea paving the way for a new leader comes at a time of mounting tensions over last month's underground nuclear test.

All indications say that the North may be preparing to test-fire medium and long-range missiles.

Despite the news about his son, there were no signs Kim Jong Il intended to step down anytime soon.
