Iran could soon be capable of hitting the U.S. with a long range missle. A report by the Defense Department estimates Iran could have such a weapon by 2015.
"With sufficient foreign assistance, Iran could probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015," said the April report, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.
The report also shows Iran is smuggling weapons to insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan and providing support to Hezbollah and Hamas.
"Iran, through its long-standing relationship with Lebanese (Hezbollah), maintains a capability to strike Israel directly and threatens Israeli and U.S. interests worldwide," the report said.
The U.S. continues to build up weapons shields in Europe and the Persian Gulf to protect allies. The Pentagon is pushing for tougher sanctions against Iran.
President Barack Obama's advisers are considering various options to curb Iran's nuclear programs, including military strikes, if diplomacy and sanctions fail.
