Euthanasia is taking place in hospitals in Quebec, even though it's not legal, according to the president of the province's association of physicians.
Dr. Gaétan Barrette told Quebec lawmakers that most residents there think euthanasia should be an option.
According to the Canadian media, Barrette wants euthanasia legalized throughout Canada.
"The choice of the patient is his choice," he said. "We want legislation in tune with the wishes of the public."
But until then, he says Quebec should put new policies in place to protect doctors who are already helping patients commit suicide.
However, opponents argue that euthanasia could end up being used to kill terminally ill patients to cut down on medical costs.
