Pakistani officials say eight German terrorists were killed in a U.S. missile strike in the rugged mountain border area of northwest Pakistan.
Monday's drone strike came one day after a terror alert was issued for Europe.
Officials believe the men were members the group Jihad Islami, a cell of Germans and Britons at the heart of the suspected plot to stage Mumbai-style attacks against European cities and American travelers.
Intelligence teams have been rounding up suspects they believe are behind the series of plots.
In southern France, police arrested 12 suspects on Tuesday in sweeps of Islamic militant networks.
According to a police official in Paris, the arrests were part of two separate counterterrorism cases under investigation by French judges
"The terrorist threat exists, and could hit us at any moment," French Defense Minister Herve Morin warned in an interview published Sunday in the daily Le Parisien. "Networks organizing themselves to prepare attacks are constantly being dismantled around the world."
