During World War II, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer stood up to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, struggling to keep Germany's church from joining the Nazis.
Eventually, Bonhoeffer -- who was born Feb. 4, 1906 -- joined the resistance movement. In the end, Hitler had him executed.
