This week marked the birth of one of the most heroic Christian figures of the 20th century.

During World War II, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer stood up to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, struggling to keep Germany's church from joining the Nazis.

Eventually, Bonhoeffer -- who was born Feb. 4, 1906 -- joined the resistance movement. In the end, Hitler had him executed.
