An official from Libya's military council said Moammar Gadhafi, his son, Muatassim, and former Defense Minister Abu Bakr Younis were buried at dawn on Tuesday in unmarked graves.
On Monday, interim government spokesman Ibrahim Beitalmal said the three would be interred in an unknown location to prevent vandalism, the Associated Press reported.
Beitalmal said AP reporters were shown a text message affirming that Muslim prayers were read over the bodies, which were buried in the presence of a few relatives and military council officials.
Over the weekend, the country's chief pathologist performed autopsies on all three and took DNA samples for identification purposes.
The acting government said they would provide more information on their deaths following an investigation.
