An Iranian pastor imprisoned for his faith is being denied medical attention for his deteriorating health.
Several sources report Benham Irani is suffering from severe stomach ulcers and colon complications and he may have only months or even weeks to live.
Nevertheless, prison officials have refused to let him see a doctor. According to media sources, frequent beatings by prison guards and cell mates have inflicted injuries to his legs and eyes. In mid-July, he was unconscious for three days.
"As a result of injuries sustained during these assaults, he has difficulty walking," Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported. "His health has further deteriorated due to the harsh prison conditions; he has suffered severe bleeding as a result of ulcers and complications with his colon, which led to his recent loss of consciousness."
"He is also unable to see very well and there are growing concerns that he could die within the next few months," CWS said.
The 41-year-old Irani is serving a six-year prison term for running a house church.
Meanwhile, another Christian leader has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The American Center for Law and Justice reports that Farshid Fathi was charged with "actions against the state" because of his Christian faith.
