The man whose wife was forced to have an abortion wants the Chinese officials responsible to face criminal charges.

In June, Deng Jianmei's wife was forced to undergo an abortion seven months into her pregnancy.

The couple already has one child and could not afford the $6,300 fine for violating China's harsh one-child policy.

Jianmei's wife, Feng, told NBC News that family planning officials dragged her out of her relatives' home.

They took her to a hospital where she was blindfolded and injected with an abortion drug.

Since the abortion, she has been hospitalized with health problems, her sister-in-law said, without going into specifics.

The Chinese government apologized, and two officials responsible for the incident have been fired and five more have been sanctioned.

In June, the family was placed under government surveillance. Deng Jiyuan went into hiding near the end of the month when local authorities would not allow him to travel to Beijing. In the end, he made it there to seek legal help.

The family's attorney, Zhang Kai, has filed criminal charges.
