Germany Introduces Third Gender Designation

Ad Feedback

Germany will be the first country in Europe to introduce an "indeterminate" gender designation on birth certificates.

Starting Nov. 1, the option to select "blank" in addition to the standard choices of "male" or "female" will become available.

This would let parents opt out of determining their baby's gender, allowing those born with characteristics of both sexes to choose what gender to become later in life.

Under the new law, adults can also opt out of the gender binary altogether.
