President Obama will announce that 34,000 troops will be brought home from Afghanistan within the year, during his State of the Union Address Tuesday night, a senior administration official said.
That's nearly half the forces currently serving there. The decision marks the next phase in Obama's plan to end the Afghanistan war by the end of 2014.
Obama has not made a decision on troop numbers beyond 2014, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
Some Pentagon officials and private security analysts worry that pulling out of Afghanistan too quickly will leave the country vulnerable to collapse, opening the door for the Taliban to regain power.
