Unions Urge Members to Join Turkish Protests

Turkish trade union leaders urged their members to walk off the job and join Monday's demonstrations against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government.

The one-day labor walkout is the latest move in a more than two-week standoff. It comes despite harsh warnings from the country's Interior Minister Muammer Guler.

Guler told organizers not to participate in unlawful demonstrations or they will "bear the legal consequences."

On Sunday, riot police blocked streets, set up roadblocks, and fired tear gas to prevent anti-government protestors from converging on Taksim Square.
