Secretary of State John Kerry met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow Tuesday to convince the president he needs to take a tougher stance against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Putin is Assad's most powerful ally.
"The United States believes that we share some very significant common interests with respect to Syria -- stability in the region, not having extremists creating problems throughout the region and elsewhere," Kerry said, according to Reuters.
Since last summer the Syrian crisis has steadily worsened. Over 70,000 people have been reported dead, millions displaced, and recent unconfirmed reports claim that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons.
