US Designates Boko Haram a Terrorist Group

The U.S. State Department is officially designating the group Boko Haram as a terrorist organization.

The al Qaeda-linked group is responsible for thousands of deaths in Nigeria over the last several years, including the killing of many civilians.

Designating the group a terrorist organization means business and financial transactions with the organization are blocked.

The State Department called Wednesday's announcement "an important" step to help Nigeria "root out violent extremism."
