Muslims Forego Mecca Trip over Fears of Disease

Ad Feedback

Muslims are making their annual pilgrimage to Mecca, but fears of disease have many staying home.

About 2 million Muslims are in the Saudi desert for the Hajj, an annual rite of prayer, fasting, and religious rituals.

All able-bodied Muslims are required to make the four-day trip at least once in their lifetime.

However, there are about 1 million fewer making the trip this year because of fears of an outbreak of respiratory illness on the Arabian peninsula.
