Pope Wants Missionary Church, Modern Spirit

Pope Francis said he wants a missionary church with a modern spirit to give hope to the poor, young, and elderly -- much like his namesake, St. Francis, did.

He also denounced the "Vatican-centric" perspective of past administrations.

Pope Francis met with eight cardinals from across the world Tuesday to begin talks of reform. He wants local church leaders involved as well.

The agenda of the cardinal cabinet meetings will include discussions on the overhaul of Vatican bureaucracy.

He has often been called unique, earning nicknames like "the cold call pope" for surprising members of his global congregation with spontaneous, encouraging phone calls.
