Syria has until Saturday to submit an inventory of its chemical weapons and facilities. There are indications, however, the Assad government might miss the deadline.
The United States had initially emphasized a strict deadline as a test of Syria's commitment to the deal.
But on Wednesday, the State Department said it would actually not demand the full inventory this weekend.
"Our goal is to see forward momentum," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. "We've never said it was a hard and fast deadline."
Despite allegations of a delay, Russia said it received assurances from the Assad regime that the deadline will be met.
