President Barack Obama begins an eight day trip across Asia this week to strength ties with key countries like the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, and South Korea.

Noticeably missing from the itinerary: China. Analysts say the president will need to be careful not to alienate Beijing with his trip.

"At a time of ongoing regional tensions, particularly with regard to North Korea and territorial disputes, the trip offers a chance for the United States to affirm our commitment to a rules-based order in the region," U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice said.

All four countries on the president's itinerary are in disputes with the Chinese government over islands and waters in the south and east China seas.

So far, the United States hasn't formally taken sides in any case.
