Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is expanding the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

"We owe to it all the families involved to get to the bottom of this mystery," Abbott told reporters in Canberra on Monday. "Australia will not shirk its responsibilities in this regard."

Abbott said the U.S. Navy's Bluefin 21 completed its search of a 6-mile radius, 2.8-mile deep area where signals resembling pings from the aircraft's black boxes were heard. The robotic underwater vehicle did not find anything.

The prime minister described the search as "probably the most difficult search in human history."

It's been almost two months since Flight 370 went missing en route from Malaysia to Beijing.

So far, no trace of the passenger plane has been found.
