In commemoration of Holy Thursday, Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 elderly and disabled people as a reminder that Christians are called to serve like a "slave."

The 12 he chose for the blessing included non-Catholics and women.

The pontiff's non-traditional choices have often been criticized. Some traditional Catholic leaders said the recipients should have been men since Jesus' 12 disciples were men.

At the beginning of his papacy, the pope washed the feet of 12 women and Muslim inmates.
