Many in government, the media and academia are fighting for stricter laws to separate Americans from their guns because of a belief that it will mean less crime and violence.
Meanwhile, some 100 million Americans now own guns and the number goes up all the time.
Pro-gun supporters believe more guns in the hands of good guys is the best deterrent to mayhem wreaked by gun-wielding bad guys.
Frank Miniter, in his book, The Future of the Gun, looks at how the love or hate of guns is driving a deep wedge between Americans.
