In Australia, Santa Claus is doing more than finding out whose naughty or nice - he's saving lives.

On Saturday, a group of firefighters was handing out candy to local children at their annual Christmas drive in the streets of Rutherford in the New South Wales, when they smelled smoke coming from a nearby house.

Nick Carey, who was still dressed up like Santa, and the Telarah Fire Crew jumped into action.

A man in his twenties had fallen unconscious inside the house, and Carey was able to provide first aid to the man until the ambulance arrived.

"I think the beard and the hat came off when we started the resuscitation," London's Daily Telegraph quoted Carey. "It's definitely the weirdest and most awkward situation I've found myself in."

The dramatic rescue was captured by local resident Michael Johnson, who was filming on his phone.

"I went around the corner a few minutes later and here's Santa Claus working on this guy on the ground," Johnson said. "This young bloke is nearly dead and Santa Claus is bringing him back to life. It's the ultimate Christmas present anyone could ever get."

The fire victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
