At least two people were killed by a massive explosion in Yemen on Wednesday near the home of the Iranian ambassador.

Eyewitnesses report a car loaded with explosives pulled up next to the house and then detonated.

Hossein Niknam, Iran's new ambassador to Yemen, arrived in the city last week. Iranian officials say the ambassador was unharmed.

Some speculated that al Qaeda was behind the attack.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is seen by Washington as the most dangerous branch of the terror group. The jihadists have been linked to several botched attacks on American soil.

"This is the first of many expected attacks that al Qaeda has been threatening against Houthi and Shia targets as the Houthi offensive against al-Qaeda-backed tribesmen continues," Hakim al-Masmari, editor-in-chief of theYemen Post, told Al Jazeera.

"This shows how tense the situation in Yemen is," he said. "Iran is seen as the one of the main backers of Houthis in Yemen."
