An Islamic court in Pakistan has decreed that blaspheming Islam's prophet should be punishable only by death.

According to Morning Star News, the Federal Shariat Court oversees criminal courts that deal with cases concerning Islamic law.

Blaspheming Mohammed was originally punished by life in prison or death, but the FSC recently ordered the government to remove life in prison as an option.

Religious freedom experts say the development is troubling because it could lead to greater persecution of minorities, as well more power for the Islamic court.
