More than 60 women and girls have escaped from the Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram.

The escapees had been abducted from Kummabza village in late June.

An official in Chibok verified that 63 women and girls escaped while their captors fought a battle with Nigerian government troops.

It is believed the girls were kidnapped about two weeks ago.

Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in April, sparking international outrage.

A month after the abduction, a chilling video filmed by the jihadi extremists was released. It showed the terrorists and girls in floor-length Islamic dress speaking to the camera. At least 200 of them are still in captivity.

Meanwhile, at least 50 insurgents were killed during clashes with Nigerian soldiers as security forces repelled an attack on a military base in northeastern city of Borno.
